We hope to work with many of them in the months ahead on a planned network of open media sites as a way to cultivate an independent commons of information and creativity."

Gregory D. What is unique is that the stories in each day's print version of the paper are determined by readers' visits the day before to LUN's web site. Three years ago, LUN implemented a system to register the number of clicks, or visits, to each section and story on the site. This information is visible throughout the newsroom, and it is these online visits that drive the entire print content of the paper. Simply put, it's a revolution in reader-driven journalism.

Also noteworthy is that the publisher, Augustine Edwards, is planning to implement a performance measurment system whereby rewards will be given to those reporters whose stories generate the most clicks. Interesting stuff.

Source: Danna Harman, "In Chile, instant Web feedback guides the next day's paper," USA TODAY. Thursday, December 2 (p. 7A).

Gregory D.
